About the Island
The Great Blasket Island is the largest of an archipelago of Islands, known as the Blasket Islands, located off the Dingle Peninsula.
The Great Blasket spans over 1,100 acres of unspoiled, mountainous terrain. Approximately 4 miles long and 1/2 mile wide, this island is now a Special Area of Conservation, teeming with wildlife and flora. Steeped in Irish history and heritage, the Great Blasket Island was one of the most remote Irish-speaking areas of Corca Dhuibhne. Although uninhabited since 1953, it remains renowned for the rich literary heritage left by its former residents, who documented the extraordinary details of their everyday lives.

Visiting the Island
We are dedicated to preserving the natural environment of the Great Blasket Island. We kindly ask for your cooperation in helping to conserve this unique landscape during your visit. Removing rubbish from the island requires significant effort and expense. Please assist in conserving the island’s environment by taking any litter with you when you leave.
**Dogs**
If you bring a dog to the island, please ensure it is strictly controlled. The island is home to sheep and other animals that need protection.
Please make special efforts to transport any plastic waste back to the mainland for proper disposal.
The Island Conservation
Having spent 20 years landing and touring the Great Blasket Island, we are passionate about wildlife conservation. In 2024 the waters around the Blasket Islands were declared Irelands first National Marine Park and we pride ourselves on sea etiquette, respecting the wildlife in their natural environment approaching with ease and ensuring distance and space.
